About

Soprano Isobel Anthony, noted for her “vocal assuredness far beyond her years and a natural stage presence” (Chicago Classical Review), made her Lyric Opera of Chicago debut this season as Female Narrator in Jason and the Argonauts. Other season highlights include Israel in Egypt with the New York Philharmonic and Apollo’s Fire, a debut season with Fourth Wall Ensemble, and the premiere of David Lang’s poor hymnal with the GRAMMY-award winning ensemble The Crossing. Recent roles include Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni, cover) and Iris (Semele, cover) as a Studio Artist at Wolf Trap Opera, Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), and Leona (In a Grove, Midwest Premiere).

Her performance work includes several premieres: two world premieres by composers Max Vinetz and Hannah Gruendemann in a solo recital at the Bienen School of Music; soloist on the world premiere of David Lang’s in nature with The Crossing; and Diana in the Midwest premiere of Jake Heggie’s If I Were You. Another recent performances includes the soprano soloist in Luciano Berio’s Sinfonia at Bienen. She is a founding member of New York-based vocal chamber ensemble Fourth Wall, with albums forthcoming. Her work also includes solo vocals on eight motion pictures, most recently Raya and the Last Dragon and The Jungle Cruise

Isobel received her Master’s degree from Northwestern University (Voice and Opera) and her Bachelor’s degree from Yale University (Linguistics, Magna cum laude) where she served as the Artistic Director of the Opera Theatre of Yale College. During her time there, she was also a member of Yale’s Schola Cantorum with David Hill, with whom she toured internationally twice and recorded three albums on the Hyperion label. isobelanthony.com

Whether singing or speaking, Anthony was never stiff or overwrought. Possessing a remarkably even voice throughout her vocal range, Anthony delivered the most technically accomplished and thoroughly musical singing of the night with a stunning rendition of “Ach, ich fühl’s.” The high notes were floated perfectly, and she connected phrases that lesser singers would have needed to breathe between.
